Newspapers report current events that are happening in the area or region that they cover, so looking at newspapers that cover the Schenectady, Albany, or New York area are often helpful in your search for sources for a Union related topic.  

  • The NYS Historic Newspapers project provides free online access to a wide range of newspapers chosen to reflect New York's unique history. 
  • 1877-2000 are available from New York Historic Newspapers Project 
  • 1916-2016 are available in print in the Lally Reading Room 
    • (There are some missing volumes in this collection which are available on microfilm, in the New York Historical Newspaper Project, or Special Collections)
  • Last 2 months are in the Lally Reading Room on the 1st Floor
  • There are more holdings on microfilm in the basement of the library.

  • This database holds a collection of African American Newspapers from around the country. There is also a brief run of the Northern Star and Freeman's Advocate which was published in Albany, NY.

  • This database holds newspapers from the Schenectady and Albany areas, so it would be a good place to search for local newspaper articles relating to Union College topics.
