Professional associations can provide a wealth of resources for students and professionals. These associations publish current research, host conferences, and can provide professional development courses. Below is a limited list of professional associations in the field of biology.
ASHG is the primary professional membership organization for human genetics specialists worldwide.
American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Founded in 1906: "The Society's purpose is to advance the science of biochemistry and molecular biology through publication of scientific and educational journals: the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, and the Journal of Lipid Research, organization of scientific meetings, advocacy for funding of basic research and education, support of science education at all levels, and promoting the diversity of individuals entering the scientific workforce."
American Society for Cell Biology "Its objectives are achieved through the scholarly dissemination of research at its Annual Meeting and Summer Meetings and in its publications. The ASCB strives to ensure the future of basic scientific research by providing training and development opportunities for students and young investigators, and also by keeping Congress and the American public informed about the importance of biological research."
American Society for Microbiology "ASM offers a variety of Professional Development opportunities for those new to the field, as well as seasoned members of the microbiology community. In addition to the annual meetings, ASM offers pre-meeting workshops, teleconferences, webinars and other on-line professional development activities. Other options include certification programs that are valuable components in professional advancement and liscensure."
British Society for Cell Biology The Society organizes and supports meetings and conferences relevant to cell biology and plays an increasing role in raising awareness of science policy issues in the UK.
Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB)
Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology "The aims of FESPB are to advance research, education, and the exchange of information amongst plant biologists within Europe and beyond, and to support the publication of the results of research through its six affiliated international journals: Journal of Experimental Botany, Journal of Plant Physiology, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Physiologia Plantarum, Plant Biology and Functional Plant Biology." They also produce a regular newsletter.
Society for Conservation Biology "The Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) is an international professional organization dedicated to promoting the scientific study of the phenomena that affect the maintenance, loss, and restoration of biological diversity."
Society for Experimental Biology "Membership to the Society provides academics, researchers, early career scientists, students and teachers with access to an international community of experimental biologists."
Society for General Microbiology "The SGM provides a common meeting ground for scientists working in research and in fields with applications in microbiology, including medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmaceuticals, numerous industries, agriculture, food, the environment and education. The majority of members are employees of universities, research institutes, health services, government agencies and small to multinational companies." Members: 5,000+, 75% UK, 25% (60+ Countries)
