Film at Schaffer Library

A faculty resource guide to Schaffer Library's film and streaming collections.

Embedding database links in Nexus

We purchase streaming licenses that allow you to share links via Nexus or allow streaming for classroom / educational use.

Once you have found the streaming video you want to use in class, it's best to use the "permalink" feature that many databases offer. This ensures that your link will work on or off campus. Here are a few examples on how to find the permalink:

  • Academic Videos Online: use "All Options" then click the "Document URL" link at the top of the screen to copy the link.
  • Docuseek: choose "My Account" at the top of the screen, then find your movie on the list. Click "Link/Embed" for options.
  • Kanopy and Swank: use the "Share" button to get the URL to the movie

Need help embedding your links into Nexus? Schedule an appointment with Learning Design & Digital Innovation (LDDI).

Films on DVD

Many electronic classrooms at Union College are equipped with DVD playback equipment and software. Faculty may check out a DVD for classroom screening, or place an item on Course Reserve for students to check out and watch individually. Schaffer Library has external disc drives available for short-term loan, as well as dedicated media viewing stations in the Learning Commons.

Roku sticks on Course Reserve

Schaffer Library has two Roku sticks on Course Reserve to view course-related visual media only available through a commercial streaming service. Each Roku kit includes all of the necessary components to play content on any TV display on campus. There are two main ways to utilize a Roku stick:

  • Group viewing during class time: Faculty can check out a Roku stick to use in an electronic classroom
  • Individual viewing: Students can check out a Roku stick to use at one of the viewing stations in the Learning Commons. Each viewing station can accommodate up to two students at a time.

Roku sticks are first come, first serve with a four-hour loan period. Class time viewing will be given priority over individual viewing.
