Open & Affordable Educational Resources Guide

Union College Guide to OER, Textbook Affordability, etc.

How to Adapt OER

In addition to creating an OER from scratch, OER can also be adapted. A custom OER can be created more quickly by remixing and recombining parts (e.g. chapters) of other open materials.

Adapting and remixing materials can be as simple as copying and pasting the relevant information from an OER into a digital publishing platform, such as Manifold.

Attribution

What Is Attribution?

Attribution is how credit is given to the creator of an openly licensed resource that is reused in your resource. It is similar to citation: whereas citation is ethical: a way of avoiding plagiarism, attribution is legal: a way of avoiding copyright infringement. If you use an openly licensed resource in an OER that you are creating or adapting, please attribute the creator of that resource.

How to Attribute a Resource

To give credit for using openly licensed work, use the acronym TASL:

  • Title: what is the name of the work?
  • Author: what is the name of the creator?
  • Source: where can I find the work? (url, etc.)
  • License: how can I use the work?
