Black Women's Studies

Getting Started

from the Library home page:

  • Primo, our catalog, allows you to search across a large portion of the library's collections to explore topics, identify relevant databases, and evaluate the results, all within a single search experience. Results include books, journal articles, and more.
  • The Databases tab will help you to start looking for journal articles.
  • The Journals tab lists what journals and newspapers the library has access to. If you have found a citation and want to see if you can get to the full-text, use this tab to search for the journal title.(not the article title)

Circulating books related to Black women or Black feminism can be found in many different areas of the library. It is also important to note that -  historically speaking - the Library of Congress Classification schema for African American/Black Studies is biased. While work is being done to rectify this bias, it is a complex process due to the multidisciplinary nature of the research in this field. The following Library of Congress call number ranges will offer some useful information for browsing the stacks :

HM: Sociology (general).

HQ 1101-2030.7: Women. Feminism.

E184-185 African American Studies/History.

PS 3500's Black Literature

BR 563 .N4 Black Religion

Please remember that your best bet is to speak with a librarian for help finding information on this topic.
