3D Annotations & AR/VR with Sketchfab

This guide introduces Sketchfab as a way to publish, share, and annotate your 3D models.

Upload Models

To upload a model to your account, log in to your account and select "upload model" on the top menu. This button is typically orange and appears next to your blue account icon.

You can either drag and drop your 3D model files into the upload window or click on "browse" to locate your files within a folder on your computer. If you have access to multiple accounts (e.g., a personal account and an organization account), make sure you are uploading your model to the correct account. You can select the intended account by clicking the "switch account" button on the top right corner of the window.

Sketchfab supports multiple types of open and proprietary 3D files from a variety of popular 3D modeling applications. In some cases, there will be more than one file to upload (for example, an OBJ file will often include two or three separate files depending on the model: an OBJ file for the model geometry, an MTL material file, and a JPEG or other image file for the model texture if there is one). Below, you can see how these files might appear on your computer for a model saved as "demo".

file structure

You can upload all necessary files for a single model at the same time. When they all appear in the upload window, select "upload files."

You will then be redirected to the Edit Properties page, which is described in the Editing Properties Section of this guide, as the files upload. Depending on the size of your model, it might take awhile for this process to finish. You do not need to stay on this page while it uploads. You can click the upper right 'X' button to leave the page while the model processes.

When your model is ready, you'll receive an email, and the left menu will read "ready to publish." Your model will not be published until you select "publish." You can exit the page by clicking the "X" button if you are not ready to work on or publish at this time. You can also proceed with editing the model properties and 3D settings or publishing the model to make it accessible to others.
